Writing and editing nonfiction was a core part of my journalism degree. It became a significant part of my work load in 1998. This work has included instructions and technical guides, blog posts, non-fiction essays and essay collections, academic papers, procedure manuals, and website content.
Prices and Services
Overview reading – $32 per hour
This is less intensive than a proofread or a developmental edit, and helps identify the big picture successes and general areas to focus on rather than every comma-splice and typo. This may be a good place to start on the early draft of a larger project that you only have a limited budget for.
Basic proofreading and/or reformatting – $37 per hour
Proofreading includes grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and tightening of language. You can expect me to get through 4-12 double-spaced pages (500-2,000 words) per hour, depending on the state of the manuscript. This is a suitable service for a final written draft.
Reformatting involves taking content and ensuring it has a consistent style throughout. This includes everything from font, to line spacing, to the look and use of headings, to the style of citations.
While a proofread can be done on paper or digitally (via e-mail or Google Doc), reformatting must be done digitally in the word processor needed for your output. Most word processors have basic cross compatibility, but this does not carry over into formatting.
Writing – $37 per hour
This service helps with the process of creating written content from the bare ideas and developing the text into something that meets the need of the target audience. It includes full proofreading.
I can not create useful text out of nothing. Some degree of collaboration is necessary on any writing project, and this is where my news reporting skills tend to shine strongest. I can gather the needed information from a variety of sources, manuals, interviews, internal communications, and even regulatory or accrediting bodies. I am skilled at distilling this information into a useful output.
I will not write academic papers as this would be unethical. If you need a writing coach to provide feedback on your draft and help you organize your ideas or refine your message, I can provide this service.
Developmental editing – $42 per hour
Developmental editing includes basic proofreading and in-depth revision recommendations, including consistency, order, and style. I will identify missed opportunities and areas for expansion and cut redundancy or unnecessary content.
You can expect me to get through 2-8 double-spaced pages (500-2,000 words) per hour, depending on the state of the manuscript and the complexity of the content.
If this is an academic paper, I will make recommendations for expansion and clarity. I will also suggest changes in wording or word choice if needed, but will not make the revisions for you as this would be unethical.
